Traditional Ottoman Calligraphy & Latin Style Calligraphy Workshop in Istanbul
Arabic calligraphy, or Ottoman Turkish calligraphy, is the writing and, consequently, bookmaking art form. Arabic script has been used in this art the most frequently across a variety of languages. Since calligraphy was the primary method used to preserve the Qur’an, it is especially respected among Islamic arts.
Ottoman Turkish calligraphy is linked to geometric Islamic artwork found on pages and on the walls and ceilings of mosques. Islamic modern artists include calligraphic inscriptions or abstractions into their works by drawing inspiration from the calligraphic tradition.
The angular Kufic script, which was composed of square and short horizontal strokes, long verticals, and bold, compact circles, was the first to become well-known.
Early Ottoman rule saw the development of the Arabic calligraphy known as the Diwani script (16th and early 17th century). Housam Roumi created it, and Süleyman I the Magnificent saw it at its height of acclaim. Diwani was unique due to the close juxtaposition of the letters within the word and the intricacy of the line within the letter, making it both decorative and communicative.
Figurative imagery is utilized in calligraphy instruction to aid in the visualization of letter shapes.
The kalem, a pen made of dried reed or bamboo, is the typical tool used by Turkish and Ottoman calligraphers. The ink is frequently colored and selected such that its intensity can vary dramatically, allowing the compositions’ larger strokes to have a particularly dynamic effect.
